A fantastic opportunity for talented young string players in and around Penrith!

TOWARDS A PENRITH YOUTH ORCHESTRA

In early 2015, an exciting new youth strings ensemble was launched by a partnership between Penrith Symphony Orchestra (PSO), the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre (The Joan) and the world-renowned Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO). The program is the first step towards the creation of a youth orchestra affiliated with Penrith Symphony Orchestra in coming years.

Workshops and rehearsals for secondary and advanced primary orchestral string players are held in each school term, mostly on Sunday afternoons. These workshops build orchestral skills in young musicians in Western Sydney, and a pathway towards other opportunities such as membership of Penrith Symphony Orchestra or, for some, a career in music.

Penrith Strings members are eligible for complimentary tickets to PSO performances and discounted tickets for their accompanying family members. Selected Penrith Strings members also receive opportunities to perform with PSO.

They are also given access to ACO rehearsals and concerts, most recently attending the ACO Cinemusica concert at the Sydney Opera House in April. Our aim is to build the program in the region to inspire the next generation of musicians and music lovers.

Penrith Strings is complemented by the ACO Music & Art Program, which is being delivered in two primary schools in Western Sydney. The ACO Music & Art Program offers an accessible and engaging way to learn about music, where students can express their ideas and responses to music through visual art. Students receive virtual lessons from members of the ACO Inspire Quartet while also experiencing their busy lives as professional musicians.
